Our FIRST Photography Workshops

Well, first things first… it has been 8 years (yes, EIGHT) since I last blogged. I am excited to bring it back after all this time, and I can’t think of a better 1st blog post.

After YEARS of dreaming about it, we FINALLY did it! We hosted our first photography workshop. This past weekend, with a crew of 8 ladies, we attempted to divulge all that we had accumulated in portrait photography knowledge over the past decade of running a small business. We blasted our way through the basics of the DSLR and mastering manual all the way through understanding natural lighting, composition, posing, editing and tips on starting & running a photography business. (Yes…we covered an exorbant amount in only 2 days!) While there may have been moments of drinking from a firehose, we are thankful that the overall takeaway and feedback was that it was a fun and worth while experience, and all walked away having learned a ton & with the confidence put what they had learned to use! It definitely gave me the encouragement and gusto to want to do this again…and again…

the Saturday BLOOM workshop group at our 1st studio location in LA

While we had hoped to get some hands on experience mastering the outdoor lighting scenarios, the weather forced us to shift gears and we instead rented out some fun indoor spaces in LA at FD Photo studios. We had a total of 3 hands on shooting with family sessions; two included a new baby & young kids, while the last family was a with older kids. (And then we, of course, squeezed in some quick headshots for each other…cause, why not?) We found it beneficial for observing posing & instructions (& even the overall vibe of the shoot) to have different types of families represented!

After two FULL days, I was BLOWN AWAY looking over their shoulders at their SOOC work once we got back to the house for pizza and editing time! Truly just amazed at how some of these ladies had gone from only knowing how to shoot on auto to BEAUTIFULLY composed & exposed professional quality images! These ladies know how to hustle & it was fun to see them absorb it all and then put it into practice!

Here are a few images of mine from the shoots (…and I made a personal note to make sure one of us is better about capturing behind the scenes photos at the next workshop so we can share those!). And a BIG thanks to three super special families who were our ‘model families’ for the day. Past clients & friends…and all were just SO WONDERFUL!! So big thanks to all of you as well for helping make our first workshop so successful!! We are overjoyed and overwhelmed with gratitude!
